Why i’m not enthusiastic about NewsTilt

paper on a scree

NewsTilt is a new project that claims to be “the platform for the new model of journalism, centered around the journalist.” They “help journalists find their audiences” and “help readers find the best independent journalism on the web.” It’s an interesting idea but not amazing.

Content may be good, and there are a few good stories in there, but it all looks a bit too much like “paper on a screen”.The image they used doesn’t help to change that idea (on the left).

And they also say they will help journalists build their brand leaving the “writing and reporting” to journalists. Well, if you are promoting writers, it’s ok, if you are promoting a “new model of journalism” then it’s not enough.

Where is the Multimedia, the digital works? Is this a venue for the old journalism? A window for laid off writers? It all seems lacking consistency.

NewsTilt falls short of what a journalist centered project should be in 2010. It may tilt things a bit, but i don’t expect any major shift from them.

  1. This is an unfortunate piece. Check out the inconsistency between

To be clear: we are 100% journalist centered. They are our customers, our clients, our raison-d’etre. The “new model of journalism” is that – centered on journalists, and their interactions with their communities. If you expected the next coming of Christ, I think you misunderstand the real problems that journalists face today.

    1. Hi Paul, thanks for the feeddback. I have no doubts about your commitment and i praise your effort, this type of endeavors are needed, and i hope yours becomes successful. But this is my opinion, whether you like it or not, though i admit i could have been more clear about what i think NewsTilt lacks to really make a difference.

My reaction was caused by the inexistence of multimedia features, all i saw was words, and i hope you manage to cover that in a near future. That is what i meant with a new model of journalism, it is more than words. The community factor is really important and i’m glad you’re tackling that, but i don’t get excited about what i see in your website. Yet.

And i’m not expecting the second coming of Christ, because i believe that it is not an outside element that will save good journalism, but journalists themselves if they try to go beyond the worn out models and practices. I don’t misunderstand the problems journalists are facing today, but i think you misunderstood two things: this is a personal opinion, and i can be wrong and don’t have problems admitting it if it comes to it; you didn’t even bother to understand who i am, what is my relevance, and what i have done so far in journalism, for journalism, because i’m not the kind of guy who sits in front of the computer and trashes other people’s work for fun. You are doing something useful, i just think it could be better. And i’m sure that in time it will, you sound passionate and that is essential.

      Good luck.
